How to make fair random teams

Add names one per line, or use quick add when the list is short. The next choice is how the roster divides: set the number of teams directly, or set people per team and let the tool work out the count. The calculation line under the steppers shows the division in advance, so eleven people across three teams is never a surprise.

Two generation modes sit on top of that split. Fully random gives every name the same chance on each run, which is the quickest way to split names into groups when nobody is keeping score. Balanced by skill reads the 1–5 rating beside each name and deals people across the teams so the totals stay close. Optional pair rules run with either mode: keep two people together, keep them apart, and the generator returns only a result that satisfies every rule. When the rules cannot fit the number of teams chosen, the tool reports the conflict instead of quietly dropping one.

Balanced teams vs. fully random

A fair team generator is not always a purely random one, and the right mode depends on what happens after the draw. Reach for fully random in pickup games, classroom icebreakers, or any setting where the point is that nobody could have influenced the outcome. Each run is independent, so regenerating produces a genuinely new shuffle rather than a variation of the last result.

Balanced mode suits the matches where players can feel the difference. Each name holds a rating from 1 to 5, the roster is sorted by it, and the generator snake-drafts downwards: the highest-rated names go to opposite ends of the team list first, the next pair follows, and the order reverses each round, the way a fantasy draft does. The outcome is an even spread of total skill rather than an exact promise — a rating of 3 is an estimate, and a pair rule can still move a strong player onto a chosen side. Team totals stay visible so you can judge how close the split landed.

Random team generator for sports, classrooms, and games

Four settings cover most of the work. For sports, it builds pickup sides for five-a-side soccer, basketball runs, or training drills, where one player usually ends up choosing both teams and keeping the strongest ones. In classrooms, it splits a class into project groups, keeps apart the pairs who would otherwise team up twice, and sets presentation order without a vote.

Game nights use it for hidden-role party games, tabletop sessions that need an even spread, or any evening where the same two people always end up on the same side. Corporate team-building is the fourth: paste a department mix and the team randomizer produces groups that are not a copy of the seating plan, while keep-apart rules hold two managers on different sides. Saved rosters shorten the repeat sessions — store a class list or a weekly fixture list once, load it, adjust a few skill ratings, and generate again. Results copy as text for a message, as an image for a group chat, or as a link that carries the whole setup.

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on cost, pair rules, skill ratings, saved rosters, and how the two generation modes differ.

Is this random team generator free?

Yes. It is free to use and needs no account, no email, and no login. Everything runs in this browser, so your list is never uploaded and no profile is created behind the scenes.

Can I keep two people on separate teams?

Yes. Pick both names in the optional rules panel and add a Keep separate rule, and the generator will only return a split where they land on different teams. Use Keep together for pairs that should stay on one side. If the two rules contradict each other, the tool reports the conflict instead of ignoring it.

How does balanced mode work?

Each name carries a skill rating from 1 to 5. Balanced mode sorts the roster by that rating and snake-drafts people across the teams — strongest first, alternating direction each round — so the combined skill stays as close as possible. The skill selectors appear next to your names once balanced mode is active.

Can I save my list for next time?

Yes. Save this list stores the roster in this browser only, so you can reload or delete it without an account. A share link is the second option: it carries the names, settings, pair rules, and current result inside the URL, so anyone opening it sees the same split.

What’s the difference between random and balanced teams?

Fully random gives every name an equal chance on each run, which suits groups where nobody starts with an advantage. Balanced mode uses the skill ratings to spread stronger and weaker players, which suits a competitive match. Both modes honour the same keep-together and keep-apart rules.

How many people should be on a team?

Three to eight per team is a workable range for most casual games, classroom groups, and party formats. Set either the number of teams or the people per team, and the calculation line shows how your roster divides before you generate.
